The Implantology and Oral Rehabilitation Program, developed through a strategic collaboration between the internationally renowned New York University College of Dentistry (NYU), Dental Best Practice and Dyna Dental provides dental professionals with an exceptional opportunity to advance their expertise in implant dentistry to the highest international standard.
This comprehensive two-year postgraduate program seamlessly integrates world-class academic education in the United States with clinically focused, hands-on training in the Netherlands. The curriculum is designed to reflect the latest scientific evidence, technological innovations, and contemporary treatment concepts in oral implantology and oral rehabilitation.
The program consists of four intensive academic weeks at New York University College of Dentistry in New York City, distributed throughout the two-year curriculum, complemented by two intensive blocks of three hands-on training days in the Netherlands. Participants gain in-depth knowledge of advanced diagnostic protocols, treatment planning, surgical and prosthetic procedures, as well as the latest developments in implant and restorative dentistry. Scientific theory is continuously linked to clinical application through case-based learning and expert-led discussions.
A cornerstone of the program is the development and presentation of two comprehensive clinical patient cases, which participants manage under the guidance of experienced faculty members. These cases are refined throughout the program and formally presented during the final academic week at NYU.
In addition, each participant undertakes an independent, evidence-based research project on a self-selected topic within the field of implantology. This culminates in the completion of an academically rigorous dissertation that demonstrates critical appraisal skills, scientific reasoning, and the ability to translate research findings into clinical practice.

Course Description
This opening session establishes the foundation for the entire educational program. Participants are introduced to a structured and evidence-based approach to implant dentistry, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive diagnostics, risk assessment, and interdisciplinary treatment planning. Faculty members will discuss the integration of clinical examination, radiographic interpretation, and patient-specific factors in the decision-making process. Particular attention will be devoted to accurate clinical documentation, medico-legal considerations, and the development of complete patient records. Through clinical examples and case-based discussions, participants will acquire a practical framework that can be directly implemented in daily practice.

Course Description
This session focuses on the principles and techniques of contemporary surgical wound closure. Following a concise theoretical overview covering needle selection, suture materials, tissue handling, and flap stabilization, participants will engage in an intensive hands-on workshop. Live camera demonstrations provide detailed visualization of each procedure, enabling participants to refine their surgical skills and develop predictable suturing techniques that contribute to optimal wound healing and long-term treatment success.

Course Description
This intensive course day provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary periodontal and periodontal-plastic surgical procedures. Participants will explore diagnostic protocols, treatment planning strategies, and evidence-based approaches to initial periodontal therapy. Advanced surgical concepts, including regenerative procedures such as GTR and GBR, will be discussed in depth. The esthetic component focuses on soft tissue augmentation procedures, including connective tissue grafting, free gingival grafts, and tunneling techniques. Throughout the day, theoretical instruction is integrated with extensive hands-on exercises on porcine models, allowing participants to develop practical surgical competencies in both regenerative and esthetic periodontal therapy.

Course Description
This session provides participants with a systematic approach to implant site assessment and treatment planning using both digital and conventional workflows. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of anatomical structures, esthetic considerations, functional requirements, and biomechanical principles. Participants will gain insight into patient selection, surgical protocols, and treatment execution for straightforward implant cases. Practical recommendations and clinical pearls will be provided to enhance predictability, safety, and efficiency in implant surgery.

Course Description
The restorative phase of implant therapy is a critical determinant of long-term success. This session addresses the relationship between esthetics, function, and restorative design. Participants will explore restorative treatment planning, occlusal concepts, material selection, and the influence of restorative decisions on implant outcomes. During the practical workshop, participants will fabricate provisional restorations for immediately placed implants, utilizing contemporary digital workflows and restorative protocols. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary collaboration between the surgical and restorative team to achieve predictable and high-quality treatment outcomes.

Course Description
This course day is dedicated to the esthetically demanding aspects of implant therapy. Participants will develop an advanced understanding of soft tissue management strategies aimed at preserving and enhancing peri-implant tissue architecture. Topics include pontic site development, papilla regeneration, immediate versus delayed implant placement protocols, and surgical-restorative considerations affecting esthetic outcomes. The program concludes with a discussion of one-stage and two-stage implant approaches and contemporary healing abutment concepts. Theoretical instruction, clinical case discussions, and practical exercises are combined to facilitate direct clinical application.

Course Description
This advanced surgical session focuses on bone augmentation and sinus elevation procedures in implant dentistry. Participants will learn how to evaluate anatomical limitations, identify appropriate indications, and select suitable grafting materials and surgical approaches. Various augmentation techniques, including Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR), autogenous bone grafting, lateral window sinus elevation, and transcrestal sinus augmentation, will be reviewed and practiced during hands-on workshops. Particular attention is given to complication management, risk assessment, and evidence-based decision-making to optimize clinical outcomes.

Course Description
This session provides an in-depth review of the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of peri-implant diseases. Participants will learn to identify risk factors, apply contemporary diagnostic criteria, and differentiate between peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Both non-surgical and surgical treatment modalities will be discussed, together with maintenance protocols designed to support long-term peri-implant health and implant survival.

Course Description
The final session focuses on the prevention, recognition, and management of complications associated with implant therapy. Faculty members will discuss common technical complications, including prosthetic failures and restorative challenges, as well as surgical complications such as infection, compromised osseointegration, and sinus membrane perforations. Evidence-based treatment strategies for peri-implant diseases are reviewed, with emphasis on risk management, complication prevention, and improving the predictability of long-term treatment outcomes.
The Implantology and Oral Rehabilitation Program is a comprehensive two-year postgraduate educational pathway designed to combine academic excellence, clinical training, and scientific development. The curriculum provides participants with a balanced integration of advanced theoretical knowledge, hands-on clinical experience, and scholarly research.
Program Structure
The program consists of:
- Four intensive academic modules of four days each at the New York University College of Dentistry in New York City.
- Two intensive clinical training modules of three days each in the Netherlands, focused on hands-on surgical and restorative skills development.
- Structured faculty mentorship and supervision throughout the development of two clinical patient cases and an evidence-based scientific dissertation.

Throughout the program, participants progressively develop their clinical competencies, scientific reasoning, and treatment planning skills under the guidance of internationally recognized faculty members from both New York University and Dental Best Practice.
Upon successful completion of the Implantology and Oral Rehabilitation Program, participants will have developed the advanced clinical, scientific, and decision-making competencies required to perform implant therapy at the highest international standard.
Throughout the program, participants will gain expertise in:
- Advanced treatment planning and surgical implantology, including complex implant placement procedures, bone augmentation techniques, guided bone regeneration, and sinus floor elevation procedures.
- Soft tissue management and peri-implant esthetics, enabling the achievement of predictable and long-term esthetic outcomes, particularly within highly demanding esthetic zones.
- Contemporary prosthetic rehabilitation, integrating functional, biological, and esthetic principles to create durable and patient-centered restorative solutions.
- Digital dentistry workflows, including three-dimensional diagnostics, CBCT interpretation, CAD/CAM technologies, digital treatment planning, and guided implant surgery.
- Evidence-based clinical practice, through critical appraisal of scientific literature, comprehensive case analysis, academic discussion, and the translation of current research into clinical decision-making.
- Interdisciplinary treatment planning, fostering collaboration between surgical, restorative, periodontal, and laboratory disciplines to optimize patient outcomes.
- Clinical problem-solving and complication management, enabling participants to confidently address both surgical and prosthetic challenges encountered in daily implant practice.

The Speakers and Faculty

Below is a selection of the distinguished speakers who contribute to the NYU educational programme.
Dr. Walter van Willigen
Program Director – Supervision of the development and presentation of clinical patient cases and thesis projects.
Dr. Walter van Willigen graduated from the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) in 1990 and subsequently established himself as a general dental practitioner in the south of France. Between 1994 and 1996, he completed the Implantology Program at New York University (NYU), followed by a two-year postgraduate program in Implantology at the University of Bordeaux.
Since 1998, Dr. Van Willigen has served as Program Director for Implantology at NYU Continuing Dental Education, collaborating with institutions including the University of Bordeaux, the University of Montpellier, and ACTA/University of Amsterdam–Amsterdam UMC. Until 2023, he successfully managed a private practice in Juan-les-Pins, France, specializing in implantology and reconstructive dentistry.
Dr. Gordon van der Voort
Dr. Gordon van der Avoort is a retired periodontist and implant dentist. From 1978 onwards, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Periodontology at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and later at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA).
In 1994, he was one of the founders of the Referral Clinic for Dentistry in Amsterdam, a multidisciplinary clinic bringing together various dental specialties under one roof. In 1995, he transferred from the Department of Periodontology to the Department of Oral Implantology. Between 2006 and 2012, he served as Chief of Clinic, where he was responsible for the education and supervision of dentists specializing in implantology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Van der Avoort has delivered numerous postgraduate courses on periodontology and oral implantology. To this day, he remains actively involved in the field, with a particular interest in the biological and technical complications associated with dental implants.
Dr. Erik Blom
Dr. Erik Blom graduated in Dentistry from the University of Amsterdam in 1989. During his undergraduate studies, he developed a strong interest in dental implantology, which has remained a central focus throughout his career.
Following graduation, he worked as a general dentist with the Royal Netherlands Navy and in several private practices in the Netherlands and abroad. In 1994, he joined the Department of Oral Implantology at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), where he specialized in reconstructive and aesthetic dentistry.
In 2001, Dr. Blom obtained his PhD with a dissertation on bone regeneration using growth factors. In the same year, he established his private practice, Tandheelkunde Kliniek, in Blaricum, where he focuses on general dentistry with a particular emphasis on complex oral rehabilitations. In 2002, he completed a Master of Science degree in Oral Implantology at the University of Amsterdam.
Dr. Blom currently serves as Assistant Professor at ACTA. He has authored numerous scientific publications and is a frequent speaker at both national and international conferences and postgraduate courses.
Dr. Thibaut de Jong
Dr. T.X. de Jong graduated in Dentistry from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 2001. Following graduation, he began his professional career in a solo dental practice on Van Woustraat in Amsterdam. One year later, he established his own practice, T.X. de Jong Tandzorg BV, in Amersfoort, where he continues to practise today.
Driven by a strong interest in implant dentistry, Dr. De Jong pursued extensive postgraduate education in the field. He completed his implantology training in 2004, followed by a Master’s programme at the University of Catania (2006–2007). In 2007, he became a registered implantologist with the Dutch Association of Oral Implantology (NVOI), and in 2009, he obtained his Master’s degree in Implantology from ACTA in Amsterdam.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr. De Jong has held several leadership and educational positions. From 2010 to 2012, he served on the board of the Dutch Dental Association (NMT) for the Central Netherlands region. Since 2012, he has been an assessor for the NVOI, and from 2016 to 2023, he was a board member of the Academy for the Advancement of Implantology in the Netherlands (BIN).
Since 2017, Dr. De Jong has been a faculty member at Academiae Implantologica in collaboration with Dental Best Practice. In this role, he lectures at national conferences and educational events, teaches implantology and aesthetic dentistry, and contributes articles to the professional journal Dentista.
Through the combination of extensive clinical experience, advanced academic training, and a strong commitment to education, Dr. De Jong has established an excellent reputation within the field of implant dentistry in the Netherlands.
Dr. Paul de Kok
Dr. Paul de Kok graduated in Dentistry from the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). He is a registered Restorative Dentist with the Dutch Association of Restorative Dentistry (NVVRT) and practices at the Clinic for Periodontology Amsterdam (KvPA), where he treats referred patients with complex restorative and aesthetic dental conditions.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. De Kok earned a PhD as a researcher and is affiliated with the Department of Dental Materials Science at ACTA. He has also served for several years as Assistant Professor of Indirect Restorative Dentistry. He is the author of numerous national and international scientific publications and acts as a reviewer for several international peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. De Kok is Chair of the Scientific Committee of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics (AAFP), an active member of several scientific societies, and a frequent lecturer at both national and international conferences and continuing education courses.
Dr. Johan Cossé
Dr. J.H.P. (Johan) Cossé graduated in Dentistry from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 1988. From 1990 to 2007, he worked as a general dental practitioner in a group practice in Hoofddorp, focusing primarily on prosthodontics and implant dentistry. Between 1996 and 1998, he was affiliated with the Department of Oral Implantology at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA).
Since 1999, Dr. Cossé has been practising at the Clinic for Periodontology Amsterdam (KvPA). Since 2007, he has also served as a lecturer, educator, and researcher within the Department of Oral Implantology at ACTA, where he is involved in both postgraduate education and clinical research.
Dr. Yvonne de Waal
Dr. Yvonne de Waal graduated cum laude in Dentistry from the University of Groningen in 2007. Since 2008, she has been affiliated as a dentist and researcher with the Center for Dentistry and Oral Hygiene at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). In 2015, she obtained her PhD with a dissertation on peri-implant inflammatory diseases.
Dr. De Waal was co-author of the Dutch Clinical Practice Guideline on Peri-implant Infections, published by the Knowledge Institute of Oral Care (KIMO) in 2018, as well as the Clinical Practice Guideline for the Prevention and Treatment of Peri-implant Diseases published by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) in 2023. She has authored numerous international scientific publications and serves as a member of the Research Supervision Committee (COB) of the Royal Dutch Dental Association (KNMT).
Alongside her academic career, Dr. De Waal has worked since 2007 as a dentist at Mondzorgcentrum Winschoten, a multidisciplinary practice providing general dentistry, implant dentistry, and orthodontics. She became co-owner of the practice in 2012. In addition to general dentistry, her clinical interests focus on implant dentistry and the treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. She is accredited by the Dutch Association for Dental Sleep Medicine (NVTS) as a Dental Sleep Medicine Practitioner.
Dr. Guido Rhemrev
Dr. Guido graduated in Dentistry from the University of Amsterdam in 1998. After three years in general dental practice in both the Netherlands and Italy, he entered the Master’s programme in Periodontology at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) in 2001. In 2006, he was recognised as a Periodontist by the Dutch Society of Periodontology (NVvP), followed by recognition as an Implantologist by the Dutch Association of Oral Implantology (NVOI) in 2007.
Since 2004, Dr. Guido has been practising at the Clinic for Periodontology Amsterdam (KvPA), where patients are treated within a multidisciplinary team of dental specialists. In addition, he serves as a part-time lecturer.
His primary clinical and scientific interests include periodontal plastic microsurgery and regenerative therapy. He has published extensively on these subjects and is a sought-after speaker, presenting numerous national and international lectures on periodontology and implant dentistry.
